How to use the Morse code translator
- Type or paste. Write a message to get Morse code, or paste dots and dashes to get text. The label above the box shows which way it is translating.
- Listen or watch. Press Play to hear the code. Each letter lights up while it sounds, so you can follow along. Flash blinks it on the whole screen.
- Take it with you. Copy the result, share a link that opens with your message, or download it as a WAV audio file.
What you can type
The translator follows international Morse code as defined by the ITU, with the letters A to Z, the digits 0 to 9 and punctuation such as . , ? ' / ( ) : = + - " and @. It also knows the common extras ! & ; _ $ and accented letters such as É, Ñ, Ä, Ö and Ü. Letters with accents that have no code of their own, like Í, are sent as the plain letter.
To send a prosign, write it in angle brackets: <SK> for end of contact, <AR> for end of message, <SOS> for the distress signal without letter gaps. When decoding, dots and dashes may also be typed as · • _ or −, and words may be separated by /, | or a new line.
How Morse code timing works
Everything in Morse code is measured in dots. A dash is three dots long. The gap inside a letter is one dot, the gap between letters three dots, and the gap between words seven dots. Speed is counted in words per minute using the word PARIS, which is exactly 50 dots long, so at 20 words per minute one dot lasts 60 milliseconds.
Farnsworth spacing keeps the letters at full speed but stretches the gaps between them. You hear each letter as the same quick rhythm it will always have, with extra time to recognize it. Set the effective speed lower than the speed to use it.
Flashlight, screen and vibration
Flash turns the screen into a signal lamp that blinks the code: hold the phone up so someone across a room or a campsite can read it. On Android phones with Chrome you can switch to the real flashlight inside the flash view. A flashlight reacts a little slowly, so keep the speed at 10 words per minute or lower. On Android, Vibrate buzzes the pattern, which is a quiet way to practise. iPhones do not let websites control the flashlight or the vibration motor, so they use the screen.
Questions and answers
How does the Morse code translator know which way to translate?
It looks at what you type. If the box holds only dots, dashes, slashes and spaces, it is read as Morse code and turned into text. Anything else is treated as text and turned into Morse code. Swap moves the result into the box, so you can check it the other way round.
How are letters and words separated in Morse code?
In written Morse code, a space separates letters and a slash separates words, for example .... .. / - .... . .-. . for HI THERE. When Morse code is sent as sound or light, the gap between letters is three dots long and the gap between words is seven dots long.
What does the # in my translation mean?
It marks a character that has no Morse code, such as an emoji or a symbol like ~ or %. The note under the result lists which characters were replaced. When you translate Morse to text, # marks a group of dots and dashes that is not a known letter.
Can I hear the Morse code and change the speed?
Yes. Press Play to hear it. Under Sound settings you can set the speed from 5 to 40 words per minute, the pitch of the tone, and Farnsworth spacing, which keeps each letter fast but adds longer pauses between letters and words. That is how most people learn to copy Morse code by ear.
How do I download Morse code as an audio file?
Press Download WAV. The audio is made in your browser at the speed and pitch you set, and saved as a WAV file that plays on any phone or computer.
Can my phone flash Morse code with the flashlight?
Press Flash to blink the Morse code on the whole screen. On Android phones with Chrome you can also switch on the flashlight in the flash view. iPhones do not let websites control the flashlight, so they use the screen. On Android, Vibrate taps the code out on your phone.
Which characters does the translator support?
All 26 letters, the digits 0 to 9, the punctuation of the international (ITU) standard plus common extras like ! and &, accented letters such as É, Ñ, Ö and Ü, and prosigns written in angle brackets, for example <SK> or <SOS>. Accented letters without their own code are sent as the plain letter.
How do I share a Morse code message?
Press Share link. It copies a link with your message in it. Whoever opens it sees the same message and can play it.
